About Me

As usual, a blog typically needs an about me section to tell you about me, what I stand for and how I got started.

Gardening hasn't always been part of my life... in fact, I always thought that I couldn't grow anything, that I could get seeds to sprout, but that would be as far as I would get... turns out you actually need to water plants in order for them to grow, and that they need sunlight.

Who knew?!

Our composter
After moving out of home I always lived in apartments, which meant no actual garden and a lack of patience to even try (I have since learned about container and vertical gardening... you can grow veggies in small places). After moving in with my wonderful partner and step daughter, I have since found my inner gardener after wanting to grow my own vegetables.

Introduction of the
bokashi bucket
A book by the Little Veggie Patch Co has become my bible, in fact it was what gave me the confidence to try a veggie garden! Written by Aussies, it was relevant, but also written for a newbie and offers a wealth of knowledge on not only what to grow and when, but how and why. I also use Gardenate religiously to understand what to plan according to my climate and I use their app to track what I planted and when

Worm castings!
Since starting out in a few large pots, I then upgraded to raised garden beds, introduced a worm farm, a composter and bokashi buckets. Now that we have moved house, I am starting once again from scratch... but now with (a little) more knowledge at my disposal. I am continuously researching different methods, problems and ideas and have also developed my interest in sustainability.

My wonderful little helper
As a nutrition student, I know about the importance of nutrients of fruit and vegetables, but never quite understood the difference in quality between supermarket produce and home grown... and let me tell you, the difference is significant! I will never forget the first time I ate home grown lettuce, I never knew lettuce was meant to be sweet!

First carrots from
the garden!
My stepdaughter has been involved in every step of my gardening journey and there is nothing I love more than to be in the garden with her, teaching her what I know so that she will not only have a better appreciation of food and the environment, but also encourage her to try new foods, watch plants grow and learn about gardening and nutrition.

I have started this blog as a way of posting what I learn, what I am excited about or even problems I have along the way. I was initially doing this on my nutrition/weightloss blog, but thought I may as well start this one to keep it more relevant.
